Top 10 First Grade Prep!
First grade is full of so many new, fun things! Being prepared for new experiences will always help put worried minds at ease. Here are my top 10 suggestions to ensure your child is prepared for first grade!
1. Know Personal Information! A home phone (or a parent's cell phone) number, home address, parents'/guardians' names, and their own birthday are all good basics to know.
2. Independence! "Self-help" skills is another way to put this. Being able to blow their nose, get dressed, use the restroom (this includes washing hands), open snacks, and tie shoes all by themselves are necessary steps to growing up. In first grade they are also expected to work independently.
3. Endurance! If your child had half-day kindergarten last year, they will have to learn to be at school all day long this year. This is usually really hard the first month or so of school! Talk to your child about this and help them practice not taking naps during the hours of the day when they will be in school. Have them work on tasks for an extended period of time to help them be ready for school.
4. Routine! In first grade, we have a set schedule each day. Start setting a routine at home will help your child prepare for school! Don't let them sleep too late and encourage them to not snack all day long. Try setting up a time every day to work on something school related like reading, math facts, writing a story, etc.
5. Social Skills! First graders are expected to use manners (saying please and thank you), take turns, share, use words to express emotions/needs/wants, and interact positively with peers and adults.
6. Review Reading! Read every day! Practice letter sounds/names, sight words, rhyming words, correctly retell stories, etc.
7. Review Writing! Practice handwriting and basic sentence structure (start with a capital letter, use spaces between words, and end with punctuation). Encourage your child to write their first and last name, label their pictures, write down their thoughts/stories, write about things they see, etc.
8. Review Math! Writing numbers, fluently counting to 100, math facts (addition and subtraction), naming shapes, patterns, identify money, etc.
9. Respect! Being respectful includes keeping hands and feet to themselves, following rules and directions, listening to others, and treating others they way they want to be treated.
10. Positive Attitude! First grade is full of new experiences and it is going to be challenging, but it is also going to be SO FUN! Encourage your child to have a positive attitude about school! It's a great idea to help prepare your child for difficult situations that could happen at school (not always getting along with peers, feeling homesick, etc.), but make sure you don't scare them! Try to always put things in a positive light and help your child to be excited for school!
